I spent many years in field service, so I still use my paletted tool case for small tools, it sits on the chest. I keep my tools straight, so I have added a roll-around tool chest to the side. On screen, I can zoom in on a small part of the drawing and enlarge it. I keep a place to set the keyboard aside. Unless it is a quick reference, if I need to use a paper file for any length of time, I just scan it into the computer. I have room for my computer screen on the corner of my bench, all my schematics are there. I added a small outlet strip off to the side for my solder gear.

My unit under test might need an outlet or run on the variac, but it is possible in many cases I need to plug in more than one thing to set up a system, so I like a few free outlets up front. I have a couple switched outlets for use during service. But you can add that to a home built one too.Įvery piece of gear that lives on the bench should already have an outlet, I should not have to unplug anything to use something else. My riser is a commercial one from Grainger, and has duplex outlets all along the front edge. I also have a similar strip across the rear edge of the bench top. I have a long outlet strip across the rear of the riser for test gear - like every 6" outlet. I have a dual 40 watt fluorescent fixture up under the riser, as well as one of those up over the bench top above my head. I chose a tall riser, so I had room under it to work on deeper things. That also brings the scope face out closer to my face. If you only work on things that fit on a shelf, then my table on wheels cart may not be all that useful.Īn important part of my bench is the riser - fancy name for the shelf over the bench.I like a deep one, like 18", deep enough my scope need not hang over space at its front. A 30x40" mixer desk sits on my cart, and I can spin that around and work from any direction. I would stand to pull the chassis from the cab and swing that around to the bench top. Sitting on my stool I can spin the cart around on its wheels to get to any side of the combo. I can put a Fender Twin Reverb on the cart. They don't fit on the bench or belong there.

But in pro audio, I service combo instrument amps and synthesizer keyboards, and large mixers. I use the bench for things like amp chassis and small stuff. I do a lot of work on my shop cart/table.

I can bring my belly right to the bench top. SO you can't roll your legs under there, forcing you to sit back and, yes, lean forwards to the bench top. I see many benches built with a 2x4 beam across the front low, or shelves right out to the front of the bench down there. That is an upholstered seat, and a foot ring. I opt for no arms, though some like them. Think basic office swivel chair, but taller. I have spent many an hour on a plain old round stool from Grainger, but mainly I use drafting stools. My bench tends to be standard height, I guess about 3 feet? Countertop, not desk top.
